Apparently there is a need for the force to use more rugged military-style uniforms when "working" the streets.

Ladies and gentlemen, the illusion is over. The police aren't out there to protect the citizenry, they're out there to assault the citizenry.

As someone who has worn both types of uniforms, I can tell you the BDU type tactical uniforms are also much more comfortable, cooler, and less maintenance. The dress uniforms aren't well suited for jumping over fences, running, and other physical pursuits. Anything that makes it easier for the police to catch some punk rapist or thief from escaping is good in my book.
